A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Classes, Gear, and What to Expect in the First Few Lessons.

Are you intrigued by the elegance and strength of pole dancing and aerial arts? These disciplines offer a unique blend of fitness, artistry, and fun. Whether you're looking to get fit, learn a new skill, or join a vibrant community, starting your journey with pole dancing and aerial arts can be incredibly rewarding. As Term 3 approaches at Phoenix Pole Studios, it's the perfect time to dive in and explore what these exciting activities have to offer.
Choosing the Right Classes
1. Know Your Interests:
Pole Dancing: Ideal for those who enjoy dance and want to build strength and flexibility. It's a fantastic full-body workout that incorporates dance, acrobatics, and strength training.
Aerial Silks: Great for those who love the idea of performing in the air. It involves climbing, wrapping, and dropping on long pieces of fabric, building immense upper body and core strength.
Lyra (Aerial Hoop): Perfect for those who want to combine the grace of dance with the strength and agility of aerial work. It involves performing various poses and tricks on a suspended hoop.
2. Age-Appropriate Classes:
Kids’ Silks Classes (Ages 9-11): These classes are tailored for younger enthusiasts, focusing on the basics of aerial silks in a fun and safe environment.
Adults’ Lyra and Aerial Silks Classes: Suitable for adults of all fitness levels, these classes will help you develop strength, flexibility, and aerial skills.
Pole Dancing Classes: Open to adults, these classes range from beginner to advanced levels, ensuring everyone can progress at their own pace.

Getting the Right Gear
1. Clothing:
Pole Dancing: Wear shorts and a tank top to allow your skin to grip the pole. Avoid lotions or oils on your skin as they can make gripping difficult.
Aerial Silks and Lyra: Wear fitted clothing that covers your legs and arms to protect your skin from friction burns. Leggings and a long-sleeved top are ideal.
2. Footwear:
Pole Dancing: Bare feet are recommended for better grip. As you advance, you might choose to wear specialized pole dance shoes or heels.
Aerial Arts: Bare feet or flexible, soft-soled shoes are best to maintain grip and flexibility.
3. Additional Gear:
Grip Aids: You might find grip aids helpful, especially for pole dancing. These can be in the form of liquid chalk or specialized grip lotions.
Water Bottle and Towel: Staying hydrated is key, and a towel can help keep you dry and improve your grip.
At Phoenix Pole Studios, we offer a range of grip aids and pole wear, ensuring you have everything you need to get started.

What to Expect in the First Few Lessons
1. Learning the Basics:
Pole Dancing: Your initial classes will focus on basic spins, climbs, and holds. You'll also work on building the necessary strength and flexibility.
Aerial Arts: You'll start with foundational moves like climbing the silks or hoop, basic wraps, and simple poses. Safety and proper technique will be emphasized.
2. Building Strength and Flexibility:
Don’t worry if you don’t have amazing upper body or core strength to start with. Both pole and aerial arts require significant core and upper body strength, but these will be built up as you go. Progress comes with practice and consistent effort.
3. Developing Confidence:
The supportive community at Phoenix Pole Studios will help you build confidence as you learn new skills and improve your abilities. You'll be encouraged to push your limits in a safe and supportive environment.
